| Resumo | In Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) the vegetation state and evolution are strongly conditioned by climatic seasonality and forest fires. Fires in the Cerrado are events that strongly influence the dynamics of Cerrado. They trigger a series of complex bio-physical and ecological processes and their actual impacts on vegetation are widely discussed among scientists. The present study aims at characterizing the recovery period of Cerrado vegetation after fire events in protected areas of the Federal District - Brazil using MODIS vegetation indices. We selected various zones of study within protected areas with and without recorded fires. Vegetation index NDVI and EVI of MOD13Q1 from MODIS/TERRA are used to construct data time series. The images are from the period 2000-2012, with a 250 m spatial resolution and a 16-day sampling period. The spectra of NDVI and EVI were obtained after making a 3D multitemporal data cube. Using criteria solely based on remote sensing data, we find that in natural sites (campos naturais) and Cerrado in the narrow sense the time-lag necessary for the vegetation to recover after a fire event is, respectively, in average 94 and 100 days when considering NDVI data, and 102 and 105 days, respectively, for natural sites (campos naturais) and Cerrado in the narrow sense when considering EVI data. This result does not imply that the floristic composition is identical to what it was before the fire, but it shows a very rapid recoverability of the Cerrado vegetation which is somehow has adapted itself to the high frequency of these events. |
